  • Master of Science (MS) - Marital, Couple and Family Counseling/Therapy
Online master's degree specialization prepares learners to assume positions as marital, couple, and family counselors and therapists within agency, community, and private practice settings. Learners will develop the ability to deliver systems-based counseling theory and research methods in contemporary practice. This counseling education program requires academic course work and two 10-day face-to-face residencies.

Note: While this program will prepare you for the licensure examinations, it does not guarantee you will receive a license.
  • Master of Science (MS) - Mental Health Counseling
Capella University's CACREP-approved mental health counseling specialization prepares learners to assume positions as mental health counselors within institutional, community, and private settings. Program components, including academic preparation and clinical training, teach counselor education professionals to apply varied theoretical mental health approaches and research activities in contemporary practice assessment and treatment protocols.

This master's degree specialization is approved by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). It is the first and only online program in the nation that has achieved CACREP-approval. This accredited counseling education program requires academic course work and two 2-week, face-to-face residencies.

Note: While this program will prepare you for the licensure examinations, it does not guarantee you will receive a license.
  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - Counseling Studies
PhD specialization in counseling studies offers professionals within counseling and human service professions the opportunity to gain advanced academic skill and research competencies. This program is ideal for counseling professionals and those who seek leadership positions in educational, consulting, agency, institutional, public, or private human services settings.

Residency requirements: Three 1-week residential colloquia taken in conjunction with program milestones.
  • Master of Science (MS) - Counseling Psychology
The Harold Abel School of Psychology master's degree specialization in counseling psychology prepares learners to pursue the doctoral degree. This rigorous online curriculum focuses on counseling theory, group counseling, and the development of psychological testing skills. Some master's degree graduates may pursue licensure as psychology assistants or technicians and therefore need to be familiar with their home state's licensure board requirements. However, for those interested in the independent practice of psychology, this specialization does not prepare graduates for licensure as a professional counselor or psychologist. For those interested in a doctoral degree, Capella University offers a PsyD in the area of counseling psychology, which complements this master's degree.
  • Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) - Counseling Psychology
Capella University's PsyD specialization in counseling psychology prepares learners to pursue diverse career paths within our changing society. Because this area is ultimately designed for state licensure eligibility* as a counseling psychologist, it is a very rigorous program that requires online course work, residency, and field training experience. In addition to providing counseling services to individuals and groups, graduates will be prepared to work with non-profit organizations, and to teach at the undergraduate or graduate level. This specialization prepares learners for state licensure eligibility as a counseling psychologist.
  • Master of Science (MS) - Counseling Studies
Our master's degree specialization in counseling studies is designed for learners within counseling, psychology, or sociology fields who wish to pursue careers in private or public human services settings or counseling service delivery settings, or as a precursor to a doctoral program. Core courses provide fundamental knowledge in the discipline, while electives provide an examination of contemporary issues that allow you to focus on populations and/or practice interest areas.

Note: The counseling studies specialization is not designed to meet licensure requirements for the counseling professions.

* Capella University does not guarantee licensure. If you intend to seek licensure or certification, check the program requirements for licensure or certification in your home state. State regulations vary regarding course requirements for professional licensure.
